Deadly Gunmen Raid Reported at Niger’s Main Airport and Military Base in Niamey
Gunmen raided the largest airport in Niger, the Diori Hamani International Airport, which is also its largest military base, in Niamey on Thursday morning, resulting in the death of 35 people. According to the Defense Ministry of the country, the victims included 22 of the attackers, 11 soldiers, and two civilians. The assault kicked off right after morning prayers in the form of heavy gun shots and blasts, forcing security personnel along with some locals armed with machetes to search for the attackers who had become indistinguishable from other citizens. As of yet, no one has come forward with claims of being behind this assault, the second major attack on the highly secured aviation facility after the Islamic State-inspired attack in January.
